Hello everyone, we’ll start writing some blogs to get you inspired for your next staircase design. If not, just use them for other things like home design projects. There’s a lot of different styles, so there’s a lot of ground to cover, but for now, let’s start with Art Deco.

What is Art Deco?

An Art Deco Painting

Art Deco is a modern visual style that emphasizes intense colours and strong shapes, both mixed together in one extravagant piece. Rigidness, symmetry, technology, these are the main themes present in Art Deco thanks to the influence of the Machine Age imagery at the time of World War I. It flourished during this period (1930s to 1940s) but lost popularity after the conclusion of World War II. Art Deco contrasts with its predecessor, Art Nouveau, which focused instead on organic, flowing, themes.

Difference with Art Nouveau

art deco vs art nouveau

Like all fads or anything that becomes fashionable, people will quickly replace the “old news” with new. In this case, it was Art Nouveau with Art Deco. Everyone moved from flighty nature-inspired works, to man-made ingenuity. The picture to the right serves as a good example of their differences from each other. Notice the green and flowery themes of Art Nouveau, then contrast it with the harsh dark lighting, and cool colours of Art Deco.

Art Deco in Architecture

Art Deco has inspired several famous landmarks. Take for example the Chrysler Building in New York. The building has subdued, grey colours, and bold angular lines. Steel, glass, and stone work hand in hand to bring an impression of strength, endurance, and the future.  For a few examples of Art Deco in the UK, you don’t need to look further than Du Cane Court in Balham, and the Daily Express Building in Manchester. Truly, these architectural marvels have stayed in the minds of many thanks to Art Deco.

Art Deco in Stair Design

Of course, Art Deco has moved staircase designers to follow the style. All manner of stairs like helical and spiral stairs stayed true to the concepts of the style, resulting in several interesting and unique staircases to be brought to life.

If you’re the type of person who believes in efficiency, technological advancement, and looking good in the process, then Art Deco is for you. We hope we helped you find some inspiration through this Stairspiration, and helped you create some ideas of your own.
