Choosing a Railing for Your Spiral Staircase

Spiral staircases rely more on their railings compared to other types of stairs – not only are they for safety, spiral stairs depend on them for support.

Even though railings are usually built for utilitarian and safety purposes, this does not mean that you can’t build them to be more appealing. In fact, a few homeowners have enjoyed spending a bit of their time conceiving amazing designs for their railings. The sky’s the limit when it comes to the myriad of styles that can be created, so just let loose while you are designing your staircase railings. Before you go ahead however, please consider the points we’ve outlined below to make sure your design is appropriate or you may regret it later.

Don’t forget the children, the disabled and the elderly

Who uses the stairs? This is something to keep in mind when figuring out what kind of railing to use because some railing styles might not fit well with other people. For instance, some of the more imaginative railing styles may indeed be impressive but they may also be difficult for the elderly and children to hold on to. Railings boasting a “too unique” design might make the stairs more hazardous for the vulnerable.

The texture and surface of the railingimage001

How important is the feeling when you hold the railing in your hand? It’s quite important, even though most people might not think so. Some people prefer hand railings that are smooth, glossy and maybe a little slippery to the touch, thus instilling a feeling of grandeur; meanwhile, others opt for the rougher railings with more traction (like aluminium railings), particularly those who value safety. If you change your preferences in the future, the railing can be repainted or re-coated to alter the texture.

Railing material

Usually, the materials used for the railing and the staircase itself are the same but of course, you have total control. Use a combination of materials to give your stairs a different personality or to compliment the room. Just remember that not all materials work well and some are difficult, if not impossible to use together.

It would be a shame to have to replace your railings and the added expense can take a chunk out of your wallet as well. With these points in mind, we hope you can avoid some of the expensive and time-consuming mistakes that other people have made, when choosing the perfect railings.
